Hole in One Holiday Miracle

Getting a hole in one is truly a miracle.  So many golfers go their entire life without experiencing this accomplishment.  Getting a hole in one on the first swing with your brand new set of fitted irons is like winning the lottery and being struck by lightning in the same day.  It is pretty much impossible....  But not for John Lillis.

Recently I fit John into a new set of Ping G20 irons.  We went through a detailed fitting and got everything dialed in.  We placed the order and he received the clubs within 2 weeks.  His specs were TFC 169 graphite regular flex, standard length, and purple dot.  And his first time out with his new clubs, on the first hole, with the first swing of the day John had his first Hole in One!

Here is how John describes his amazing experience.
"I am still in the "glow" from my first ever hole in one with my new G-20 Ping Irons. This was my first shot of the day at the Par 3, 155 yd., 15th hole at Lake of the Pines.


I received the new clubs at my house on Sat.,12/17/11 and didn't have time to even hit a shot with them. I played the next day and did not have time to hit any warm up shots and with the frost delay rode with my friend, Steve Rhodes, to join three other golfers waiting on the 15th tee.

I was second to play and chose a 7 iron. I hit the ball exactly where I wanted it to go and it rolled from right to left approximately 15 feet and dropped into the hole!!!!!

Since that day I have been to the range once to really get the feel for my new irons. From the imprint of the ball on the club face I am hitting the ball on the sweet spot very consistently.

A Big Year for Cobra Puma Golf

2012 is going to be a BIG year for the Cobra Puma Golf Company.  From the sneak previews that I have seen, the line up of clubs and clothing are going to be excellent.  Last year Puma bought the rights to Cobra Golf and since then they have been developing a product line that is more appealing to the next generation of golfers.  With new desings, colors, and technology most retailers are already commenting that Cobra Puma has developed a brand that will not only perform well but also get you geared up for golf from head to toe. 

Pictured above are the new LONG TOM Driver and the ZL Encore.  These will be two of the hottest drivers next year.  The LONG TOM has a 48" Blackbird shaft.  There is no question that you will pick up distance, my only concern is will it stay in the fairway.  I have hit it and I picked up a solid 20 yards of carry.  The ZL Encore will have the E9 face technology which will allow for better off center shots.  It will be offered in a white or black finish.  Their new irons (no pictures or detail available to the public yet) have been tested and results are showing that they are possibly going to be the longest irons on the market.  For more information on the new clubs, check out the Cobra website. I have been a Callaway staff member for a few years now. The clubs have been great and everyone at Callaway has been a pleasure to work with.  But in 2012 I will be switching to the Cobra Puma team. Running in the C.I.M. for the Morton Golf Foundation. Support a Great Cause

I and 3 of my co-workers are running as a relay team in the California International Marathon (C.I.M.) on Sunday, December 4th, 2011 from the Folsom Dam to the State Capitol. 

As I continue to train for the C.I.M. I will be raising money for the Morton Golf Foundation which gives 100% of all proceeds back to our area youth, disabled and underserved. HE WON!!!

We all knew it was coming…just didn't know when. Rickie Fowler won his first professional tournament Sunday!!! … a runaway victory at the Korea Open. Despite a 64 by runner-up Rory McIlroy, Rickie still managed a 6-stroke victory. Only a few golfers were even within a dozen shots of our Puma Superstar! Our new line of Puma apparel and accessories starts shipping 11/15, just in time for the holidays. 87th State Fair Tournament at Haggin Oaks

The tournament season is coming to an end but we are still having some great tournaments here at Haggin Oaks. Last weekend we had the Junior State Fair Tournament (pictured above) and this weekend the top amateurs are coming out to play in the three day event. This year marks the 87th State Fair Championship which is one of the oldest and most prestigious events in the west. The State Fair has produced past winners like Kevin Sutherland, Ken Venturi, and Al Geiberger. Even if you are not playing in the tournament it would be a perfect time to play our Allister MacKenzie course. For the next few weeks the course will be in prime playing condition and you are still only paying the same lost cost for green fees.

Seasons Changing... New Clothes Arriving at Haggin Oaks

While you are still lounging by the pool trying to get the perfect tan and making your way to the golf course early in the morning to get your round in before it gets too hot, fall apparel is arriving in department stores for back to school shopping and also in the Super Shop at Haggin Oaks. Here is what has come in so far...

Ladies Adidas, a brown, peach and white line, great fall colors. As well as the new ladies Adidas long pant in black and grey.

The newest Men's Adidas line in teal, brown and white and consists of a variety of short sleeve and long sleeve polos.

A new ladies line for us this year is GG Blue, the newest line consists of purples, military green and white. There are sleeveless, short sleeve and a very cute skort.
Come check out the new colors and styles for the fall. They will continue to roll in for the next few weeks.

The Old Course at St. Andrews... Part 1 - Front 9

Finally bringing you footage from the Old Course at St. Andrews. This has to be one of the greatest golf memories of my life. I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would have the opportunity to play the most famous course in the world. It was truly a dream come true! I shot so much footage that I have to bring it to you in two parts and there is still more that I wish I could share.

I was in golf heaven from the moment I stepped off the bus till the final putt on the 18th hole. After ten holes I was 1 under... The round consisted of 3 birdies (9,10,12), 3 bogeys, and 2 doubles. Those pot bunkers were penalizing. The course was magnificent, picture perfect weather, and a solid round of golf.

Coaching Success... Making A Difference Through Golf

Junior golf is a great way to teach life lessons. I am starting my daughter off early and she is already teaching me a thing or two at her young age. I have been teaching junior golfers for many years and this year two of the juniors that I worked with are going into their freshman year in college. I wish them the best as they move forward in their golf career. Keep an eye out for these guys, they are good! Here are a few comments they wrote describing their experience learning from me...

"My name is Patrick Grimes and I am about to start my freshman year on the golf team at Stanford University. For a year during my high school career at Menlo School, I was fortunate enough to have Matt as our head coach. That year was hands down the most fun, productive, and successful year of my career at Menlo, and I believe that Matt played a huge part in that success. He was extremely level-headed as a coach, and made himself extremely approachable whenever we had questions or needed help. All of us were very comfortable around him, which allowed all of us on the team to work very efficiently and enjoy the experience, all of which contributed to a successful season. That year we advanced to our section championship, something Menlo had not accomplished in over 10 years..."

"My experience working with Matt was nothing less than spectacular. He helped my game go from an average level to an above average level in weeks. With a few easy swing tips I was hitting the ball longer and straighter than I ever have before... He has you work with the swing you have and helps you with your posture and ultimately makes you a better more consistent player when it's all said and done. Matt helped me mainly with my swing path and had me hitting up on the ball to increase my driving distance dramatically. He also told me I dropped my head slightly when I attacked the ball. He gave me some things to practice at the range and told me to stay confident and when its all done you will be a more consistent player in the long run. Sure enough after about a month I saw a drop in my scoring average and a more consistent golf game every time I went out on the course. Matt would also see me frequently around the course and stop by and give me a few tips if needed. He also hooked me up with some of the latest technology in golf balls such as the Nike 20XIs. Basically, the time I spent with Matt helped me become the golfer I am today and escalated my game to be one of the best at my college, Georgia Southern University. June Tip #3: Clocking Your Distance

I hope that you have found the previous tips to be helpful. Here is another good video golf tip that will help you with your game. When practicing this start by using your 100 yard club. Work on keeping the same tempo for all swings so the size of your back swing will determine your distance. After you feel comfortable with this club, use this drill for your wedges and other irons. This drill will help you control those approach shots and also give you more choices when you find yourself in between clubs. Good luck!

June Video Tip #2... Chipping Club Selection

Hope you enjoyed the last putting tip. Here is another video tip that will help you with your short game. Practice this around the green, transfer it to the course, and you will see your scores go down.

The goal - get the chip shots rolling sooner, closer to the hole, fewer putts.

Putting Tip... Close Your Eyes

For the entire month of June I will be posting a new video golf tip each week. This week's tip is a putting drill that I like to work on when I am struggling to make putts or loose my feel with the putter. When I practice I go through the same pre-shot routine as I would on the golf course but once I am ready to go I close my eyes. By closing your eyes you take away one of your major senses and you focus more on the feel of the putter and rolling the ball towards the hole. Also, instead of focusing on the results, picture your target in your mind and see the ball rolling into the hole. Try this drill first with short putts and as you get more comfortable increase your distance. Hope this helps you make more putts and have all the confidence on the green.... Drive for show, putt for dough!!
