What Do I Get For the Golfer Who Has Everything??

Every year I get the same question... "What do I get for a golfer who has everything they need?"  Of course you can get them more golf balls and polo shirts.  Any golfer can use more golf balls and clothing, but what ball do they play?  What size do they wear?

My advice, every golfer needs a golf coach!  I want to be that Coach for the golfer in your life.  Currently I am a PGA Apprentice and in the process of becoming a PGA Professional.  I have been teaching for over 5 years and have worked with golfers of all playing abilities.  With the holidays quickly approaching a series of Private Lessons is a great gift that your special golfer will benefit from for a long time.

The Lesson Package below is a great holiday offer that you really can't beat.  This offer is only available till December 24 so get it while it lasts.  Give the Appointment Office a call or come in to the Haggin Oaks Super Shop to get signed up.

Even the best golfers in the world have swing coaches who are constantly helping them improve their swing with the ultimate goal of lowering their score.

Coaching Success... Making A Difference Through Golf

Junior golf is a great way to teach life lessons. I am starting my daughter off early and she is already teaching me a thing or two at her young age. I have been teaching junior golfers for many years and this year two of the juniors that I worked with are going into their freshman year in college. I wish them the best as they move forward in their golf career. Keep an eye out for these guys, they are good! Here are a few comments they wrote describing their experience learning from me...

"My name is Patrick Grimes and I am about to start my freshman year on the golf team at Stanford University. For a year during my high school career at Menlo School, I was fortunate enough to have Matt as our head coach. That year was hands down the most fun, productive, and successful year of my career at Menlo, and I believe that Matt played a huge part in that success. He was extremely level-headed as a coach, and made himself extremely approachable whenever we had questions or needed help. All of us were very comfortable around him, which allowed all of us on the team to work very efficiently and enjoy the experience, all of which contributed to a successful season. That year we advanced to our section championship, something Menlo had not accomplished in over 10 years..."

"My experience working with Matt was nothing less than spectacular. He helped my game go from an average level to an above average level in weeks. With a few easy swing tips I was hitting the ball longer and straighter than I ever have before... He has you work with the swing you have and helps you with your posture and ultimately makes you a better more consistent player when it's all said and done. Matt helped me mainly with my swing path and had me hitting up on the ball to increase my driving distance dramatically. He also told me I dropped my head slightly when I attacked the ball. He gave me some things to practice at the range and told me to stay confident and when its all done you will be a more consistent player in the long run. Sure enough after about a month I saw a drop in my scoring average and a more consistent golf game every time I went out on the course. Matt would also see me frequently around the course and stop by and give me a few tips if needed. He also hooked me up with some of the latest technology in golf balls such as the Nike 20XIs. Basically, the time I spent with Matt helped me become the golfer I am today and escalated my game to be one of the best at my college, Georgia Southern University. Thanks to Matt the sky is the limit." -Mason Welch

June Tip #3: Clocking Your Distance

I hope that you have found the previous tips to be helpful. Here is another good video golf tip that will help you with your game. When practicing this start by using your 100 yard club. Work on keeping the same tempo for all swings so the size of your back swing will determine your distance. After you feel comfortable with this club, use this drill for your wedges and other irons. This drill will help you control those approach shots and also give you more choices when you find yourself in between clubs. Good luck!

June Video Tip #2... Chipping Club Selection

Hope you enjoyed the last putting tip. Here is another video tip that will help you with your short game. Practice this around the green, transfer it to the course, and you will see your scores go down.

The goal - get the chip shots rolling sooner, closer to the hole, fewer putts.
Leave your feedback and comments... Stay tuned for more videos still to come.

Putting Tip... Close Your Eyes

For the entire month of June I will be posting a new video golf tip each week. This week's tip is a putting drill that I like to work on when I am struggling to make putts or loose my feel with the putter. When I practice I go through the same pre-shot routine as I would on the golf course but once I am ready to go I close my eyes. By closing your eyes you take away one of your major senses and you focus more on the feel of the putter and rolling the ball towards the hole. Also, instead of focusing on the results, picture your target in your mind and see the ball rolling into the hole. Try this drill first with short putts and as you get more comfortable increase your distance. Hope this helps you make more putts and have all the confidence on the green.... Drive for show, putt for dough!!

Taking Your Game From The Range To The Course

Are you having trouble transferring your swing from the range to the course? You are not alone. This is a common issue for many golfers. In my teaching experience I have had many students come tell me, “I can hit ball after ball on the driving range with good distance and control but as soon as I step onto the first tee it’s a different story.” Here are a few pointers that may help you understand how to take your driving range game onto the course.

- Practice Your Pre Shot Routine: On the driving range it is easier to get into a groove hitting one ball after another with the same club and you never have to step off the range mat. Next time you practice, take your time and step off the mat in between each shot. Go through your pre shot routine before each ball at a slower tempo than what you would on the course. I like to stand behind the ball and visualize the shot I want to hit. Then I take a practice swing to feel the swing I want to execute. Finally, I address the ball with a clear mind and swing away.

- Change Clubs After Each Ball: On the golf course you rarely use the same club for back to back shots. So instead of hitting 10 to 20 balls with the same club try switching clubs after each ball. It’s ok to warm up and hit a few balls with the same club but once you are warm start to switch it up. Each time you switch clubs, pick a new target. Mix it up as well. Hit an iron and then go to a wood. Hit a full shot, then try a pitch shot.

- Play A Hole On The Range: The range is wide open with only a hand full of targets and it’s very easy to swing away and not be concerned about where the ball is going. Try to play a hole or the entire round on the range. Make up your own hole or imagine the course that you are preparing for. Hit each shot from tee to green. If you miss the green or hit a bad shot, play it as if you were on the course. You might have to hit a punch shot from under the trees or a pitch shot to get on the green.

- Focus On One Shot At A Time: We are all capable of hitting an errant shot on the range or the golf course. On the course it is a lot easier to let your last shot affect the next shot, hole or even the entire round. Whether you are on the range or the golf course it is important to put the last shot behind you. It is easy to over analyze what went wrong. Once we do that it opens the door for numerous swing thoughts and corrections to your swing. After you hit a bad shot, try to think of what you did right and how you can do that again.

I hope that you find these tips to be helpful. If you are still having trouble bringing your range game to the course, an on course lesson with me or your golf pro is another great way make the transition. Feel free to come see me at the Haggin Oaks Super Shop to ask more questions or schedule a lesson.

Golf and Lifestyle Magazine Article... Gear Up in the Winter

Back in October I was featured in Golf and Lifestyle Magazine. I apologize that it has taken me so long to get this up but I thought that I would share it with you again if you missed it. After this article was published I went on an amazing trip to Scotland with a group from Callaway. It was a trip of a life time and I will be sharing some of the pictures and videos from the trip very soon.

Golf during the winter months...

The golf "season" may be slowing down now that winter is in full swing, but this is a great time to get geared up for next year and work on your game. Right now many golf manufacturers are starting to release their new products. Callaway has released the new Diablo Octane forged composite Driver and Woods. Titleist introduced the new 910 Driver. Nike just put out the MachSpeed Black Drivers and a couple new iron sets. Ping, Mizuno, and Taylormade have also released some of their new products. If you are looking to improve your equipment feel free to contact me and I will be happy to help you find the right club and fit you properly for it.

With the weather being so cold and the busy holiday season ahead of us, many people do not have as much time to dedicate to a full round of golf. Now is a great time to come take a few lessons from me a make some changes to your swing. If you can find the time to work on your game during these slow golf months, you will be one step ahead of your golf buddies who are going into golf hibernation. Make sure you dedicate some time each week on the driving range and putting green. Even if that just means you are swinging the clubs in your backyard or putting on the carpet inside. I would be happy to work with you and make improvements to your swing that will help you shoot lower scores.

Don't let your game suffer during these slow golf months. Now is the time to check out the new equipment and take a few lessons so that you can hit the ground running when the weather starts to warm up. Contact me at the Haggin Oaks Super Shop about new clubs, fittings, and lessons. I look forward to working with you soon!
